These awards recognize scientists in the field of breast cancer research, screening, or treatment for significant work that advances basic research concepts or clinical application.
Angela Brodie, PhD, received the 2000 Basic Research Award for her work proving the inhibition of aromatase as a viable treatment option for breast cancer. Dr Brodie's work encompassed basic research, preclinical studies, and clinical use of a novel treatment for breast cancer. Dr Brodie currently is a professor in the department of pharmacology and experimental therapeutics at the University of Maryland, School of Medicine, Baltimore.
Dimitrios Trichopoulos, MD, PhD, received the 2000 Clinical Research Award for his work involving discoveries in the epidemiology and etiology of breast cancer. Dr Trichopoulos has played a critical role in the discovery of important risk factors in the epidemiology and etiology of a number of cancers. Currently, Dr Trichopoulos is a professor of cancer prevention and epidemiology at Harvard University, Boston, and a professor of hygiene and epidemiology at the University of Athens, Greece.
The Brinker International Awards for Breast Cancer Research were established in 1992 by the Komen Foundation and Brinker International, a restaurant company. Award recipients receive a $10,000 honorarium, a citation, and an inscribed crystal statuette. The deadline for nominations is April 1 of each year. The nomination process is open to anyone. Nominations are reviewed by a peer jury that selects the recipients.
