Minimally invasive kidney cancer treatment promising A recent study has found that radiofrequency ablation can be an effective minimally invasive treatment for kidney cancer, according to a July 2, 2004, news release from Big News Network.com. In a three-year study, researchers from Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem, NC, evaluated 22 participants who had kidney cancer that had not spread beyond the kidney. In 83% of participants, tumors were eliminated after a single treatment of radiofrequency ablation, and in an additional 8% of participants, tumors were eradicated after two or more treatments. None of the participants in the study suffered any serious Long-term complications.
Radiofrequency ablation is becoming more common for the treatment of several diseases, including heart arrhythmias. The procedure uses tomography technology to guide a needle-shaped electrode into the tumor. A radiofrequency current then is passed through the electrode, heating the tumor tissue and eradicating it.
