Weight & cancer danger

Q Now that I'm 35 and overweight, I realize that I've battled my weight most of my life. Is there really a cancer danger for overweight women?

C.D., Phoenix

A Doctors say yes because studies already have linked excessive weight with higher risks for cancers of the uterus, breast, colon and kidney. Now comes new research that indicates a higher risk of leukemia among older, overweight women.

A University of Minnesota study says that being overweight could more than double an older woman's risk of getting acute myelogenous leukemia, one of the deadliest leukemias that accounts for about one-third of the 33,000 leukemia cases diagnosed yearly in the United States.

When it comes to controlling weight, doctors continue to stress a well-balanced, low-sodium, low-sugar, low-fat diet and routine exercise.
