Pennsylvania DEP Releases Second Quarter Mammography Inspections Geisinger Clinic Lock Haven Accreditation Revoked as Result of Concerns Released in First Quarter Report in June; All Other Inspected Pennsylvania Facilities Meeting Federal Standards
HARRISBURG, Pa., Aug. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection today released reports for 118 mammography facilities that the department inspected during the second quarter of 2005, showing all of those facilities operating within guidelines set by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). DEP inspects each of Pennsylvania's approximately 400 certified mammography facilities annually under a contract with FDA.
The report also noted that the American College of Radiology (ACR), the professional organization that accredits mammography facilities, revoked the accreditation of the Geisinger Clinic Lock Haven on June 6. The facility is no longer certified with FDA, which has jurisdiction over mammography facilities under the U.S. Mammography Quality Standards Act.
In June, DEP raised serious concerns in its inspection report for the first quarter of 2005 about the performance of the required periodic testing of X-ray and image processing equipment at the Geisinger facility, which self- reported the problems. A subsequent clinical review by ACR of a sample of mammograms showed a number were of poor quality, unreliable and inconsistent with established quality standards.
For those who received tests during the time in question -- between May 18, 2003 and May 18, 2005 -- Geisinger is paying for new mammograms for anyone who requests one. Women who had mammograms at the facility during this time period should have received a letter from Geisinger explaining this policy. Geisinger also established a toll-free number, 1-800-705-0764, for patients to call for more information.
"Our most important job is to protect the health and safety of residents, and we believe making sure these re-tests are available at no cost will do that," DEP Secretary Kathleen A. McGinty said. "We remain committed to making sure Pennsylvania's mammography facilities provide these potentially life- saving tests in a safe and reliable manner."
The inspections are part of an ongoing effort to ensure a high-degree of proficiency in the maintenance and operation of sophisticated equipment used to conduct these tests. DEP has been releasing quarterly reports since April 2004.
A performance audit conducted by the state Auditor General's Office and released in December 2003 confirmed DEP is doing an exemplary job on inspections.
