Peru's Nuevo Continente airline added to US drug trafficking list AIRLINE INDUSTRY INFORMATION-(C)1997-2004 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD
The US Treasury Department has added the Peruvian airline Nuevo Continente, formerly Aero Continente, to its list of companies it believes are involved in drug trafficking.
Aero Continente was placed on the watch list in June 2004 with its US assets frozen, pending a further investigation into its owner Fernando Zevallos Gonzales whom the US believes is a major narcotics trafficker. The airline tried to distance itself from Gonzales by issuing stock to its employees, taking control out of Gonzales' hands, but the US has now said that it does not believe that ties with the airline's former owners have been cut properly.
American companies are now prohibited from doing business with Nuevo Continente and its assets in the US will remain frozen, reports The Associated Press.
