Nursing Drug Calculations
Spotlight on South Carolina Schools of NursingHill, DebraWhen asked to submit an informational piece describing the general and/or unique aspects of our nursing program, I pondered the assignment, and then decided that the best approach was to ask our students: "WHY ARE YOU HERE?" "WHAT MAKES YOUR NURSING PROGRAM UNIQUE?" The following response from a second-semester freshman describes the essence of our mission.

What Sets Orangeburg-Calhoun Technical College Apart
There are many aspects that set Orangeburg-Calhoun Technical College (OCTC) apart from other learning facilities in regards to Associate Degree Nursing programs. At the time that I was deciding where to pursue my education, my foremost concern dealt: with the reputation of each learning facility. It was my goal to select a school whose graduates were sought out by prospective employers. I soon learned that this was the case with graduates of OCTC. I made the decision to attend this well respected facility and make the 140 mile round trip drive each day from my home in Saluda County. However, it was not until I began the nursing curriculum that I truly understood how the facility earned such a wonderful reputation. I believe that the credit is due to the faculty, and their desire to teach nursing from a holistic approach, their professionalism, and overall dedication to excellence in the field of nursing.
The holistic approach to nursing is stressed. I learned that there are many aspects to health. I was taught to consider the client's emotional and psychological needs, in addition to their physical needs. The impact of different cultures, religions, and values, and the importance of the nurse's knowledge of the same, cannot be understated. Also, related to this holistic approach is nutrition. It is my understanding that OCTC is the only facility to include a three credit hour nutrition course in the nursing curriculum. The wealth of knowledge that I acquired from this course will enhance my ability to provide care for my clients.
The OCTC faculty also stresses and maintains professionalism. There is a focus on leadership skills, communication skills, and maintaining a professional appearance at all times. Active participation in class activities and the Student Nurses' Association is strongly encouraged. Acceptable standards are high. All students are expected to perform to the best of their ability, and the faculty of OCTC provides every opportunity for each student to succeed.
The most important difference in the educational experience received at OCTC versus other facilities is the faculty's overall dedication to excellence in the nursing field.
Their goal is to turn out quality nurses that will make a positive impact on the profession. Preparation for the NCLEX examination begins the very first day and continues throughout the course of study. Of the graduating Class of 2004, 100 percent passed the NCLEX on the first attempt. This is a very impressive statistic. In addition, accuracy in the drug dosage calculations is required. Teaching in this area also continues throughout the course of study and successful completion is required each semester in order to proceed.
I feel very fortunate to have been accepted into the QCTC Associate Degree Nursing Program, t have-no doubt that I will graduate fully prepared to exceed the expectations of my clients, peers, and employer.
