Albertson's expands energy conservation; opens new Jewel-Osco store - 2,500 grocery and drug stores cut energy consumption by 10% - Brief Article BOISE, Idaho -- Buoyed by the positive results of pilot programs conducted in seven Western states, Albertson's is expanding its energy conservation program to its more than 2,500 grocery and drug stores in the United States. The goal of the nationwide program is to reduce Albertson's annual energy consumption by 10 percent, or about 480 million kilowatt-hours of electricity per year, the retailer stated. Albertson's reported that it will reduce sales-area lighting 25 percent to 50 percent; adjust thermostats to 75 degrees in the summer and 68 degrees in the winter; turn off outdoor, wall and accent lighting during the day; limit equipment use and implement energy audits and an effective maintenance program.
In other news, Jewel-Osco, the Midwest division of Albertson's, has opened a new 24-hour food and drug store in the South Loop that reflects the city's efforts to revitalize every Chicago neighborhood, the retailer stated. The 52,000-square-foot store "combines a classical style, copper facade and extensive use of windows. The interior features a sweeping curved balcony and mosaics and murals," the chain reported. The city helped finance the project with $5.5 million in tax increment financing assistance for demolition of existing structures, necessary infrastructure work and job training.
