The American College of Physicians - merger with American Society of Internal MedicineThe American College of Physicians and the American Society of Internal Medicine have agreed in principle on the terms of a merger of the two organizations that would be complete in the latter half of 1998. If approved by the groups' governing bodies, the new organization would become known as the American College of Physicians-American Society of Internal Medicine or ACP-ASIM. Based in Philadelphia, the American College of Physicians was founded in 1915 and counts more than 100,000 internists and medical students as members. The American Society of Internal Medicine was founded in 1956 and has approximately 20,000 internists as members. The ASIM is based in Washington, D.C. Each group conducts an annual trade show.
