Annals of Internal Medicine - Industry News - Brief Article

Industry News--With many physicians now recommending against hormone replacement therapy because of increased cancer and heart disease risks, some women have turned to herbal remedies to treat the difficult symptoms of menopause. But do they work? A report in the Nov. 19 Annals of Internal Medicine suggests that the evidence for efficacy of complementary and alternative medicines is pretty skimpy, but some of the remedies, including black cohosh and foods containing phytoestrogens, such as soy, show at least some promise in relieving hot flashes. Other products, such as vitamin E, red clover, evening primrose oil, and dong quai, were deemed ineffective based on the 29 randomized, controlled trials the researchers examined.
