376. Montreal On this we all
can agree: Montreal is a fabulous city filled
with marvelous museums, beautiful architecture
and wonderful restaurants. But when it
comes to sports, cosmopolitan Montreal is
strictly finger paintings, double-wides and
headcheese.

Never mind the Canadiens' rich and storied
hockey past; that's ... well, history. Les
Habitants inhabited the NHL Northeast
Division's basement, recording only 28 victories
in 2000-01. The Expos? Not only have
they stumbled on hard times (67-95, .414,
last season, and they are roughly on the
same pace this year), but you also can wander
into yawning Olympic Stadium on any
given game night and hit fungos into the box
seats without endangering a soul.

The struggles of those two franchises
have "earned" Montreal this year's "Least
Best City" designation, a largely--OK, entirely--ceremonial
position because there are
hundreds, even thousands, of cities on this
continent that don't even qualify under our
criteria.

Take heart, Quebecois: Addition through
subtraction is a possibility, and we're not
talkin' separatism here. Should the the 'Spos
bolt for the U.S. of A. and the Canadiens
improve in 2001-02, then you could be on
your way up.
