Bush card not enough, says AARP - Pharmacy News Briefs - providing prescription drug coverage to Medicare recipients not enough for uninsured seniors - Brief Article

James Frederick

WASHINGTON -- The Bush administration's proposal for providing prescription drug coverage to Medicare recipients doesn't go far enough to provide a comprehensive safety net to uninsured seniors, according to the American Association of Retired Persons.

Reacting to the White House fiscal 2003 budget proposal and its plan to spend $190 billion over the next 10 years for Medicare prescription drug coverage, AARP policy and strategy director John Rother called for an increase in funding. "Although federal budget constraints are greater than last year, so too is the need for affordable prescription drugs for Americans age 65 and over," Rother said. "The president's budget allocation of $190 billion over the next decade for the Medicare drug benefit is not enough of a down payment on a program that would be affordable and available to all."
