FDA unveils educational campaigns - Chain Pharmacy - grants awarded from Community Pharmacy Foundation - Brief ArticleJames Frederick LANSING, Mich. -- The recently organized Community Pharmacy Foundation said it would beg in disbursing more than $250,000 in grants to promote patient care initiatives at five practice sites around the United States. Those efforts, funded by seed money from pharmaceutical manufacturers as part of a settlement of a class-action lawsuit, could help promote pharmacy care as an adjunct to the health system nationwide.
For its first round of grants, the group's five-member board chose five individuals and organizations, and revealed that several other grant applicants would be considered shortly.
The five initial awards went to:
* Betty Dong of the University of California at San Francisco College of Pharmacy, who will develop a coordinated care program with several pharmacies to provide education and medication oversight for HIV patients;
* The University of Iowa College of Pharmacy and faculty member William Doucette, who will develop a project to prove the value of integrated treatment of diabetes patients through a multidisciplinary team of health professionals;
* Pharmacist Andrea Tassone of Walgreen Co., who will launch a lipid testing service at two Walgreens pharmacies with support from the Department of Pharmacy Practice at the University of Illinois College of Pharmacy. "The protocols developed ... will be tailored so community pharmacists across the United States can utilize them," noted the organization's executive director Louis Sesti.
* The National Community Pharmacists Association, which will host a conference to explore reimbursement alternatives for pharmacists;
* Allan Zillich, who will direct a study in which pharmacists will provide patients with education and equipment for home blood pressure testing. The program will include a treatment plan shared with physicians.
The foundation's board is chaired by Phil Burgess, national director of pharmacy affairs for Walgreens, and includes Carlos Ortiz, vice president of government affairs for CVS.
