Kansas Board Of Pharmacy

Hearing scheduled on proposed changes - Kansas Board of Pharmacy

The Kansas Board of Pharmacy will hold a public hearing next month to consider regulation changes that relate to the pharmacist's function in filling a prescription. Possible changes include:

The judgmental functions performed by a licensed pharmacist shall consist of the verification of the compounding, counting and measuring of ingredients, as well as documentation of the order's accuracy; the delegation to nonpharmacists of the nonjudgmental duties associated with medicinal preparations; the prohibition of all pharmacy personnel from performing judgmental functions restricted to the pharmacist; and the interpretation and verification of patient medication records and the performance of drug regimen reviews.

The pharmacist shall notify patients if a brand exchange has been exercised.

Based on professional judgment, the pharmacist may decline to counsel patients if he or she determines that counseling may be detrimental to the patient's care or to the relationship between the patient and the physician.
