Rhode Island is changing to a less costly pharmacy network in an effort to save $820,000 on state employees' health care costs - Brief Article * Rhode Island is changing to a less costly pharmacy network in an effort to save $820,000 on state employees' health care costs. Beginning Nov. 1, the state is dropping four area chains from its network. They are Walgreens, Target, Shaw's Supermarkets, and Stop & Shop pharmacies. The 20,000 people covered under the plan will be restricted to using other pharmacies if they want coverage for their medications. The move is being opposed by the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, Council 94, the union that represents the state employees. The state's pharmacy benefit is managed by CVS subsidiary PharmaCare through a contract with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Rhode Island. Contact Council 94 at (401) 724-5900.
