Ebony's top black high school seniors

THE Class of 2004 Top Black High School Seniors represent the resolve of many African-American teens to master a high school curriculum and, volunteer within their communities. Despite the turbulent times in which we five, they are keeping their eyes on the prize.

SHERRAE M. HAYES is valedictorian at Glenville High School in Cleveland. She is vice president of the senior class and a member of the National Honor Society. Recognized by Who's Who Among American High School Students, Hayes has earned a full scholarship to Tennessee State University, where she will study speech communication and theater.

MONIQUE VAN DYKE is on the National Honor Roll at the University High School in Newark, N.J., a member of the National Honor Society, plays basketball and tennis, and has been recognized by Who's Who Among American High School Students. Van Dyke will study culinary arts at the University of Connecticut.

DAVID PARKER is valedictorian of Birmingham's West End High School. He plays football, baseball and performs in the school's orchestra. Parker wants to become a high school science teacher, and he plans to attend Dillard University.

RANULFO ALLEN of Philadelphia's Central High School is a National Merit Commended Student, Ventures Scholar and a recipient of the National Achievement scholarship. Allen will attend Princeton University, where he will study chemical engineering.

STESHA ADAI DOKU is the top-ranked student at the Myers Park High School in Charlotte, N.C. Doku is a Coca-Cola Scholar and a national Ventures Scholar. She will attend Yale University, where she plans to study biomedical engineering.

ASHLEY THOMPSON of the Choir Academy of Harlem is a recipient of the United States Achievement Academy Minority Leadership & Math award, and has been recognized by Who's Who Among American High School Students. She plans to study math and physics.

ASHLEY HICKS of Chicago's Whitney M. Young Magnet High School has earned a 4.6 GPA (on a 4.0 scale). Hicks is an Illinois State Scholar and a recipient of the Chicago Urban League Award for Academic Achievement. The varsity cheerleader will attend the University of Southern California, and she plans to become a sports reporter.

YONAS YEMANE of Louisiana's Baton Rouge Magnet High School is an AP Scholar with distinction, and a recipient of the prestigious Bausch & Lomb science award. Yemane is a member of the National Honor Society and president of Mu Alpha Theta. He plans to pursue a career in biochemistry at Stanford.

JOSHUA BROOKS is president of the Student Government Association and captain of the football team at South Atlanta High School. Brooks, a recipient of the President Bill Clinton Award for Excellence, is on the national honor roll, and is recognized by Who's Who Among American High School Students. He will study engineering.

TONYA JONES of the Jesse H. Jones Senior High School in Houston is a member of the National Honor Society and vice president of the speech and debate team. She will study pre-medicine at the University of Texas at Callas.

RAY BIGNALL is student council president at Nashville's Hume-Fogg Academic Magnet High School. Bignall is a National Merit Scholar, National Ventures Scholar and a member of the National Honor Society. He was awarded a full scholarship to Howard University, where he plans to study biology.

KRYSTLE N. BRUNSON with a 4.78 GPA (on a 4.0 scale) is the top-ranked student at the John Marshall High School in Richmond, Va. Brunson is president of the National Honor Society, vice president of the Student Council Association, and a member of the Future Business Leaders of America. Brunson plans to study nursing at Virginia Commonwealth University.

CHAUNCEY WILSON, valedictorian of the Callaway High School in Jackson Miss., has been recognized by Who's Who Among American High School Students. She is class vice president and a member of the National Honor Society. She has received a full scholarship to Jackson State University, where she plans to study marketing.

JANET L. BEYAN is on the principal's honor roll at the King Brew Magnet High School of Medicine and Science in Los Angeles. She has received numerous scholarships, including the Ronald McDonald House of Charities award. She will study disease prevention.

KATHERINE SCOTT of D.C.'s Woodrow Wilson High School is a participant in the Washington National Cathedral Scholars Program and a member of the National Honor Society. Scott, who also serves as president of the art club, plans to study fashion design.

ROZELL N.A. HODGES JR. The tennis champion is on the Principal's List at Chicago's Kenwood Academy. Hodges is a member of the National Honor Society, the Spanish Honor Society, and the French Honor Society. A recipient of the $5,000 Centennial scholarship, Hedges will study biochemistry at De Paul University.

NIKISHA GLENN, the top-ranked student of the Alain Leroy Locke High School in Los Angeles, is the recipient of the prestigious Governor's leadership award. Glenn, who has yet to decide her college major, was also awarded the $100,000 Posse Leadership Award. She will attend Grinnell College.

KASHARAH CHERELL KING is ranked in the top 1 percent of her class at Kirby High School in Memphis. King is a member of the National Honor Society, the National Beta Club and is a senior class officer. The track & field athlete was awarded the MVP Award and plans to become a physical therapist. She will attend Fisk University.

ERICA D. UPSHAW, co-salutatorian of Atlanta's Booker T. Washington high school, is a student ambassador to France and has earned approximately $300,000 in scholarship offers. The aspiring emergency room doctor plans to study biology and pre-medicine at Emory University.

ARLO JOHNSON is salutatorian of Detroit's Mackenzie High School. The future engineer is a member of the National Honor Society, co-editor of the school newspaper and is a member of the varsity football team. He will attend the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor.

LAUREN D. MEEKS of the Waggener Traditional High School in Louisville, Ky., is a governor's scholar, president of the Key Club honor society, secretary of the National Honor Society, and is recognized by Who's Who Among American High School Students. Meeks will major in international studies at Bellarmine University.

LORI GORDON of the Stanton College Preparatory High School in Jacksonville, Fla., is an AP Scholar, a member of the Mu Alpha Theta honor society, and is recognized by Who's Who Among American High School Students. Gordon has earned a full scholarship to Florida A&M University, where she will study pharmacy.

JASON JUDE of the Michael J. Petrides High School in Staten Island, N.Y., is a member of the National Honor Society, Junior ROTC. Jude, who has been recognized by Who's Who Among American High School Students, also has a 2nd-degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do. He plans to study politics at Middlebury College.

JESSICA ASHLEY RIVERS has a 4.72 GPA (on a 4.0 scale) and is the top-ranked student at Crestwood High School in Sumter, S.C. Rivers is an All-American Scholar, Ventures Scholar, recipient of the USAA National Minority Leadership Award and is a member of the National Honor Society. She will study pro-medicine.

JOSHUA UNDERWOOD is the top-ranked student at Armstrong High School in Richmond, Va. He is a member of the National Honor Society, National Achievers Society and Mu Alpha Theta. Underwood has been offered a $56,000 scholarship award to Virginia Intermont College. He plans to study pro-medicine.

KENDRA JOHNSON of the School of Health Professions at the Yvonne A. Ewell Townview Center in Dallas is the recipient of the Dallas Urban League Outstanding Achievement Award, and the Most Outstanding Band Member Award. Johnson is a member of the National Honor Society and is the head drum major of the marching band. She plans to become a nurse practitioner.

YOLONDA Y. ROGERS is on the "A" Honor Roll at the North Community High School in Minneapolis. She is a member of the student council, student government, and the National Honor Society. The future social worker also has perfect attendance.

MIKALA PATRICE STREETER of the Charles Herbert Flowers High School in Springdale, Md., made two missionary trips to Ghana, West Africa, and is a member of the National Honor Society. Streeter, a participant in the NASA Sharp+ research program, will study electrical engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

JADE ANDREA BURCH, the top-ranked student at Detroit's Renaissance High School, is a member of the United States National High School Scholars Honor Program, National Honor Society and is a recipient of the Michigan Merit Award. Butch plans to study pre-medicine at Columbia University in New York.

THOMAS S. REIVES is a Ventures Scholar at the Arsenal Technical High School in Indianapolis. He is treasurer of the National Honor Society, and captain of the varsity soccer team. Reives has been awarded full tuition to the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. He will study engineering.

JUSTIN BOYD an aspiring architect of the Northland High School in Columbus, Ohio, is senior class vice president, captain of the track team and is a member of the National Honor Society. Boyd plans to attend Ohio State University.

CURTIS HOPSON is the senior class vice president at the Metro High School in St. Louis. The future computer scientist is on the national honor roll, and has been recognized by Who's Who Among American High School Students. Hopson plans to attend Florida A&M University.

CELISA HUDSON AND MARCUS SMITH are future engineers and honor students at Norview High School in Richmond, Va. Hudson is the recipient of the Virginian Pilot Scholastic Achievement Award and is a member of the National Honor Society. She plans to study engineering at Virginia Tech. Smith is a member of the Honor Roll Society, Spanish Club and is a participant in the NASA Sharp+ program. Smith plans to study mechanical engineering.

KESIDE CHINEME DELU UGOJI of Fairhope, Alabama's Fairhope High School is the president of the Mu Alpha Theta honor society, a member of the All-State Choir and is captain of the cross-country track team. She has received more than $150,000 in scholarship offers and plans to attend Yale.

BRANDON CHRISTIAN HENLEY is a member of the National Honor Society and the Math National Honor Society at Omaha's Central High School. Henley also has over 100 hours of community service. The avid golfer plans to study biomedical engineering at Vanderbilt University.

JENNIFER BEAL is valedictorian at the Lafayette High School in Buffalo, N.Y. Beal, a recipient of the prestigious Kodak Award, is also the captain of her debate team. The future pediatrician volunteers at Millard Fillmore Hospital and plans to study pre-medicine at Canisius College.
